Use the Bagua Map as a Room Review Tool
Bagua (八卦) literally refers to the “eight trigrams,” symbols with roots in the Yijing tradition. In contemporary feng shui, the familiar 3 × 3 Bagua grid places eight outer guas around a center. Use it as a structured observation tool: sketch one room, notice where clutter or unfinished tasks interrupt it, choose one life area, and pair a safely placed crystal with one real action.

Two Common Ways to Align a Bagua Map
Many confusing Bagua diagrams are not actually contradicting one another—they come from different schools. Choose one method for a project and label it on your sketch. Mixing the two halfway through produces an unusable map.
Door-aligned / BTB
Align the bottom edge with the formal entrance
Place the three-square row of Knowledge, Career, and Helpful People along the wall containing the formal front door. For a single room, use that room’s main door. This is the easiest method for a beginner and the method used by the diagram on this page.
You need: a floor plan and the formal entrance.
Compass / Classical
Orient sectors to cardinal directions
Classical approaches use directional readings and more context than a generic nine-square download can capture. North is commonly associated with Kan/Career, south with Li/Fame, east with Zhen/Family, and west with Dui/Creativity.
You need: a reliable compass reading and a consistent school or practitioner.
Beginner recommendation: use the door-aligned method for one clearly bounded room. If you already follow Classical feng shui, keep your compass-based chart and use the crystal suggestions below only as symbolic decor prompts.
How to Map a Room in Five Practical Steps

Choose The Scale
Map either the whole dwelling or one room. Do not switch scale partway through the exercise.

Sketch The Boundary
Draw the usable outline, doors, fixed cabinets, large furniture, windows, and any missing or projecting sections.

Mark The Entrance
For this guide’s BTB method, use the formal front door—or the main door when mapping a single room.

Overlay A 3 Ă— 3 Grid
Stretch the grid across the full boundary. A zone may cover parts of more than one physical room; that is normal.

Observe first, clear or repair what is practical, then add one stable crystal and one written action.
Worked example
A 10-Minute Wealth-Corner Reset
On the door-aligned map, the Wealth area is the far-left zone when you stand at the entrance looking in. In a bedroom, that may be a dresser corner; in an office, it may include part of a bookcase.

Choose Crystals by Role, Not by Promise
Color Cue
Match the area’s color family when you want the grid to be easy to remember: green for Wood, red for Fire, earth tones for Earth, white for Metal, and dark tones for Water.
Material Cue
Use the stone as a tactile reminder. A dark palm stone at an entry can cue boundaries; a clear point by a notebook can cue a defined next step.
Room-Safe Format
Prefer low trays, bookends, bowls, or enclosed displays. A beautiful object is not helpful if it wobbles, blocks a path, or attracts small hands and pets.

Bedroom
Map from the bedroom door. Keep heavy clusters off narrow nightstands and never under pillows. Try paired rose quartz objects in Relationships, an amethyst on a stable Knowledge shelf, or a single dark stone in Career beside tomorrow’s priority card.
Home office
Use the office door, not the desk orientation, for the door-aligned grid. Put carnelian near a portfolio display in Fame, green aventurine near a revenue tracker in Wealth, and clear quartz near your contact list in Helpful People.
Living room
Keep the center open enough for normal circulation. A family photo with green-toned stone in Family can cue a weekly call; a lidded idea box with clear quartz in Creativity can hold shared plans without adding visual clutter.
Studio apartment
Map the full apartment first. Only map a micro-zone, such as a desk, when it has a clear boundary and purpose. Use fewer, multi-purpose objects instead of repeating nine crystal arrangements in a small space.

Rotating the BTB map to make Wealth land where you want it. The entrance row stays Knowledge–Career–Helpful People.
Mixing door-aligned and compass methods. Pick one system for the current sketch and label it.
Treating “missing corners” as emergencies. Irregular floor plans are normal; observe the space before buying a cure or moving furniture.
Adding objects before fixing basics. Address leaks, broken items, blocked doors, overloaded shelves, and poor lighting first.
Using every crystal at once. One legible cue plus one repeatable action is usually more useful than a crowded altar.
Ignoring mineral and household safety. Keep stones dry by default, avoid intense sun for color-sensitive quartz, and secure objects around children and pets.
Crystal Care in a Mapped Room
Sunlight
Do not leave amethyst or citrine in prolonged intense sun; color can fade. A shaded shelf is a better long-term display.
Water & humidity
Use dry care as the default. Keep selenite, rough stones, elastic bracelets, and metal findings away from soaking and humid windowsills.
Stability
Use low, non-slip trays. Keep points and clusters away from bed edges, walkways, sinks, stoves, pets, and children.

Citrine and green aventurine are popular modern choices because their gold and green color stories fit abundance and Wood symbolism. Amethyst is another option for the purple color associated with Xun in many BTB charts. No stone guarantees financial results.
What if my floor plan is L-shaped or has a missing corner?
Draw the main usable boundary first and note the irregular zone without alarm. Avoid structural changes or unsafe furniture placement based on a generic chart. For a complex property, consult a qualified practitioner who uses the same feng shui school you chose.
How many crystals should I place in each area?
There is no required number. One stable piece or a small grouped tray is enough to act as a cue. Keep the room functional and avoid cluttering every one of the nine areas.
